Hawkins
City
Council
HCDC
board
reconstituted;
Alley
abandonment
nixed
By JOHN
SPARKS
Meeting
in
regular
session,
Monday,
March
17, the
Hawkins
City
Council
appointed
2008
members
of the
Hawkins
Community
Development
Corporation
and
voted
not to
abandon
an alley
in block
22.
Council
also
appointed
a new
member
to the
board of
directors
of the
Wood
County
Industrial
Commission.
The
following
were
each
re-appointed
by the
council
to serve
on the
Hawkins
Community
Development
Corporation
board of
directors:
Frank
Rucker,
Herman
Peace,
John
Moore
and Sam
Bradley.
Ordinance
050620
concerning
use of
city
parks
was
passed.
Those
wishing
to use
the park
overnight
must
obtain a
permit.
A
request
to
abandon
an alley
in block
22 of
the
Hawkins
Town
Site was
denied
by the
council.
The
consensus
seemed
to be
that a
previous
abandonment
of
another
nearby
alley
easement
had
created
a number
of
problems
for the
city and
council
members
did not
want to
repeat
that
experience.
Council
also
appointed
Chip
DeVilbiss
to the
board of
directors
of the
Wood
County
Industrial
Commission.
He will
take the
post of
Al
Harris
who has
served
for
several
terms.
A
discussion
of Mayor
Sam
Bradley’s
agenda
item
regarding
the US
Highway
80 sewer
line
project
was
again
postponed
due to
budget
considerations.
Council
members
pointed
out that
the
project
is not
in the
current
budget.
Bradley
advised
the
council
he had
invited
the
other
two
candidates
for
Mayor to
a
briefing
session
on
grants
for
funding
such
projects
as the
US
Highway
80 sewer
repair.
The
meeting
is to be
held
March
19.
Larry
Hassel
and the
city
utilities
crew
were
commended
by the
Mayor
and
council
for
their
consistently
diligent
work. In
addition,
a recent
routine
investigation
by the
Texas
Commission
on
Environmental
Quality
found
“no
violations”
in the
city’s
water
treatment
process.
Janis
Smith,
Hawkins
City
Secretary
was
advised
by
council
to hire
the
necessary
judges
and
clerks
for the
upcoming
city
election.
Police
Chief
Voda
said the
officers
of the
department
will
report
any
street
light
outages
and also
make
recommendations
regarding
the need
for
additional
new
street
lights
in the
city.
The next
regularly
scheduled
meeting
of the
Hawkins
City
Council
is
scheduled
for
Monday,
April 21
at 6
p.m. A
special
meeting
of the
council
can be
called
with 72
hours
public
notice.
