“very
smooth”
By JOHN
SPARKS
At a the
rescheduled
regular
monthly
meeting
of the
Hawkins
Independent
School
Board,
on
Monday,
September
10,
trustees
approved
a the
terrazzo
floor
pattern
for the
new
cafeteria/gymnasium
and
heard a
very
positive
report
on the
first
week of
school
from
Superintendent
Dan
Rose.
“With
the
exception
of
traffic,”
Rose
told
trustees,
“the
first
four
days of
school
went
very
smoothly.
Our
decision
to delay
the
start of
school
permitted
some
very
critical
work to
be
completed
more
efficiently
on our
renovation
program
in the
existing
buildings
and more
importantly,
it
provided
for a
more
organized
move-in
for
teachers,”
Rose
said.
In
previous
meetings
trustees
had
reviewed
several
suggested
patterns
for the
terrazzo
floor in
a
hallway
that
adjoins
the new
cafeteria
and the
new
gymnasium.
As part
of the
progress
report,
Brice
Davis of
Thacker/Davis
architectural
firm
presented
a design
incorporating
the
suggestions
of
trustees.
The
focal
point of
the
floor
will be
a Hawk
with a
seven-foot
wing
span.
Trustees
also
approved
the
expenditure
of
$5,817
to solve
a
problem
with the
installation
of
chalk/marker
boards
in 34
rooms.
Davis
also
reported
a
problem
with the
clearance
height
of the
covered
walkway
from the
junior
high
building
to the
new
cafeteria
and
gymnasium.
Alternative
solutions
are
being
considered
to solve
this
problem.
Rose and
the
trustees
also
acknowledged
a $200
donation
by City
National
Bank
which
helped
to fund
a staff
breakfast
held at
the
Family
Life
Center
of First
Baptist
Church.
The
financial
report
shows a
balance
of
$13,822,705,
with
$8.6 of
that
being
committed
to
construction.
The
balances
have
earned
interest
income
of
$18,736,
16,575
and
$13,822
during
May,
June and
July.
Rose
reported
tax
collections
stood at
97
percent
citing a
letter
report
from the
Wood
County
Tax
Assessor/Collector.
In other
action
trustees
approved
a
complicated
policy
regarding
student
expression
of
religious
viewpoints
which
qualifies
those
students
and
requires
such
students
to
register
at for
such
expressions
at the
beginning
of each
semester.
The
adoption
of the
controversial
policy
was made
necessary
by a law
passed
in the
past
session
of the
Texas
legislature.
Trustees
also
hired
Stacey
Pevey as
a first
grade
teacher.
The
position
was
approved
at an
earlier
meeting
and was
budgeted
for ’07
- ’08.
Trustees
are next
scheduled
to meet
in
regular
session
on
Monday,
October
1 at 7
p.m. A
special
meeting
of the
board
can be
called
with
72-hours
notice.
