Wood County Commissioners Court
CR-3390 abandoned;
One-ton flat bed bought
By JOHN SPARKS

Meeting in regular session Friday, May 15, Wood County Commissioners Court voted to abandon CR-3390 and acquired a diesel powered flat-bed truck for use by the Precinct-1 road crew. The court also heard a plea by a citizen to shut down a tiger preserve on CR-1801 near Mineola.
A public hearing was held concerning a request by a landowner to close down CR-3390 which runs south off of U.S.-80. Carlos "Scotter" Griffin and his wife Debbie are co-trustees of Family Land Heritage Trust which has acquired all the land served by CR-3390 south of U.S. 80 and the railroad tracks. The Griffins plan to construct a restricted entrance to the property. Following the public hearing during which no one spoke, commissioners approved of the abandonment of CR-3390 by Wood County.
One bid was received from Quitman Ford in response to advertising placed by the county for a one-ton flat-bed diesel-powered trucfk for Precinct-1. The used vehicle was inspected by Commissioner Keith Gibreath who made the motion to purchase it for $17,000.
Frank Trent, Mineola, again approached the court during public comment to complain about a refuge for lions and tigers located on CR-1801 east of Mineola. Trent held that the animals are being housed on the porperty illegally and pose a threat to farm animals and humans. In addition to approaching the Wood County Commissioners Court, Trent said he has discussed this complaint with the Sheriff, with the criminal district attorney's office and other law enforcement officials without any satisfaction.
In other action the court approved:
- a two-week County payroll of $264,363.35.
- claims totaling $242,191.00.
- employee and family health care claims of $63,786.66.
- monthy reports (April) from all four Wood County Precinct Constables.
- tax sale of property previously owned by Scott and Donna Strong to Mary Barrett for $1,573.00. Two other bids of lesser amonts were rejected by the court.
- revision of Lost Creek subdivision after public hearing.
Personnel actions included:
- Justin Wayne Williams, new hire, deputy sheriff, WCSO, $16.96/hour.
- Thomas Parker, resignation, temporary public facilities laborer, $9.00/hour.
The next regular meeting of the Wood County Commissioners Court will be Friday, May 29, 2009 at 10 a.m. A special meeting of the court can be called with 72-hour public notice.
