Blake Simmons
works on his Eagle Scout

By Jenna Camille Burns

On May 5th 2009, Blake Tyler Andrew Simmons placed three wooden park benches around the walk way of the Less We Forget Veterans Memorial in Hawkins, Texas in memory of those who served in the Military.
Designing the benches was one of the many requirements Simmons has to complete before he can become an Eagle Scout. "The idea for making the benches had been used before by other Eagle Scouts from Troop 391, so I thought I would carry on the tradition by making a few for the Memorial." Simmons also had some help building the benches from some of the other Boy Scouts. "I would like to thank Travis Pennington, Tyler Smith, Michael Edleman, John Wise and some of my other fellow scouts for their help, because without them I wouldn't have been able to get it done."
Simmons also said that he liked being able to do something for his community because he knew people would always have a place to sit while remembering those who served. "I am a Boy Scout and I am always willing to help my community by lending a hand." Simmons graduated May 29, 2009 from Hawkins High school. He is awaiting approval of his Eagle Scout Rank, which will be determined by the Eagle Board of Review Committee on June 11, 2009. Simmons is the son of Dana Burns and grandson of Charles and Beverly Jayne Turner of Hawkins, Texas.
