WCIC OK's 300K mailing; Hears Lake Fork Briefing
By JOHN SPARKS
Meeting in regular session Thursday, August 6 at The Depot, the board of the Wood County Industrial Commission (WCIC) approved participation in a promotional mailing to 300,000 fishermen and received a general overview of Lake Fork Reservoir's fish population and aquatic plant infestation from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TP&W).
The board approved the expenditure of $5,600 to participate in a mailing program that is directed to 300,000 fishermen. The mailing carries a packet of post-card sized promotional materials. The WCIC's mailer features Lake Fork "as one of the top trophy largemouth bass lakes in the nation." The mailing will be sent in October by Marketshare Publications.
Craig Bonds, Director of the TP&W Inland Fisheries Division 3 told WCIC directors the fishing population of the 26,000-acre Lake Fork is stable and has been well maintained by TP&W over the years with assistance from the government's Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act. He warned that sportsmen and citizens must be vigilant in watching for and reporting the infestations by acquatic plants. The specific immediate threat to Lake Fork is the water hyacinth plant which has shown considerable growth in the last two years. Bonds said Giant Salvinia has not been detected on Lake Fork, in spite of the fact that it has become a serious very problem at both Toledo Bend and Caddo Lake.
As a part of his monthly report, Executive Director Gary McKinley said the top ten lodging contributors generated 68.2 percent of the hotel/motel taxes collected since August '08 and five of the top ten contributors showed gains compared with the same period a year ago. New sales tax permit applications totaled 29 for July with tweleve of those filed by businessed being established in Mineola. Holly Lake had one new application and Hawkins none in July.
The next meeting of the Wood County Industrial Commission is scheduled for Thursday, September 3, 2009, at 7 p.m. in Mineola.
