I don't understand the World Cup. First of all, it goes on for weeks, and weeks and weeks and involves every country on the face of the planet including some I had never heard of. These guys run around mightily for about two hours and have scores like 1-0, 0-1, 0-2, 2-0. I think there was even one game with a score of 0-0. What kind of score is that? My theory is those ear-splitting horns issued to the fans affected the players' sense of balance.
Listen up - rulemaking matters: A federal agency (I forget which one) is running a contest for the best essay on why regulations matter. Let's see. "My favorite federal regulation is ..."
Alert! The ladies at Code Pink are promising or have already done a naked protest. If they've already done this, it didn't get much, ah, coverage. I don't understand why protesters on the Left so often wish to remove their clothes. It does not create an attractive picture.
I don't understand the moratorium on Gulf drilling. The administration has to know that this can permanently destroy thousands of good paying jobs in the Gulf states. Sadly, it seems to be agenda driven.
But there is at least one lesson to be learned from the oil disaster: When things get really messed up, depend on the engineers. They are the "get ‘er done guys."
Speaking of getting it done, I recently got a call from my cousin who lives on the New Hampshire/Vermont border. She said there are signs on the side of roads that state "Putting America to Work. Project Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act." However, she said, the signs stand alone and the roadway is unchanged. There are no workers, no equipment and no shovel-ready projects!
So stimulus funds are being used for propaganda. This would be almost as funny as Joe Biden being sent out to tell us this is The Summer of Recovery, if it was not so eerily like re-reading Orwell's "1984." Poor Biden - six million unemployed and they send him to the mid-west on a hapless mission.
On the NAACP/Shirley Sherrod brouhaha, I don't understand why the president and the Democrats in general would want race to become a major topic going into the election season. It is hurtful to the nation.
On the lighter side, I have heard that recent comments from a member of the New Black Panthers, calling white people "crackers" have resulted in a flurry of new tee shirts printed with "Cracka Guy", "Cracka Gal", "Cracka baby", and even one that says "Cracka Baby Inside." But a web search only turned up some shirts with the word Cracker and a picture of a soda cracker, plus a few other shirts carrying messages that could be called politically incorrect. Another search indicates that the word "cracker", in some parts of the country, is not necessarily derogatory.
Finally, word is floating around that Democrats are putting language into a draft of an immigration bill saying that illegal gay couples will have same rights as all gay couples in U.S. Note to lawmakers: When the guys in the drug cartels fire their AK-47s, they really don't give a rat's rear end about one's gender preference!
As a curmudgeon, there are many more things I don't understand, but I have run out of space. Have a Happy Recovery Summer! If you run into Joe Biden and you want to get him flustered, just ask one question: "Joe, where are the jobs?"
November is coming.
