Wood County peace officers killed in the line of duty
The following Wood County peace officers were killed in the line of duty:
· Volney Turner was shot and killed on April 20th, 1878. He was a Wood County deputy Sheriff. He was killed while attempting to serve a warrant and arrest a cattle thief in Van Zandt County.
· J.L. Wagner, a Wood County jailer, was beaten and killed on June 10th, 1893. This occurred while he was attempting to capture two prisoners who had just escaped from the Wood County Jail.
· R.T. Mattox, a Wood County deputy sheriff, was shot and killed on June 2nd, 1900. This happened while he was riding with a posse that was attempting to arrest a man who had been fighting in Winnsboro earlier in the day.
· Julian E. Howard was a Wood County deputy sheriff. He was shot and killed on July 10th, 1905. He had heard a shot and came to the aid of a fellow deputy who was serving some papers.
· Amos R. Wofford and John S. Wofford. Both men were shot and killed on February 4th, 1907 while attempting to arrest two men for liquor violations. Amos was a Wood County deputy sheriff and John was the county constable for Pct. 3.
· Wesley Taylor was the chief of police for Mineola. He was shot and killed on July 14, 1950 by Constable Will Whittle after Whittle became upset that Chief Taylor did not make an arrest after a minor traffic violation.
· Lucas E. Whatley was a police officer in Hawkins. He was killed in an auto accident on July 20th, 1959. This occurred when he stopped a truck driver for a traffic violation. Whatley and the truck driver were both run over and killed by a third vehicle.
· Rachiel C. Bailey, a Hawkins police officer, was killed in an auto accident on December 27th, 1965. Bailey was killed in a head-on collision while pursuing a speeding automobile.
Ed. Note: Mineola City Marshall Marcus Tillman Cage was shot and killed on October 17th, 1903. His story was told in the history column of the August 29th edition of this newspaper.
