Bonnie and Clyde visited Wood County
Most of us have heard the tales of Bonnie and Clyde and their violent forays through the central United States during the Great depression, a saga of bank robberies and shootings. It was colorful enough to be made into a popular movie.
Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow and their gang are probably the best know characters during a period now referred to as the "public enemy era."
It is said they killed nine police officers in the course of their robberies of banks and gas stations.
There are two known sightings of them in Wood County, both in Mineola. One was at a small gas station/café owned and operated by W.C. Little where they ate. The other was at a shoe repair shop in downtown Mineola where they beat and robbed Dummy Jennings, who was deaf and mute. (Today, that nickname would not be used, but times were different then.) Dr. Coleman of Mineola found Dummy and took him to his office for treatment and watched him for the remainder of the day.
If you have always wanted to know more about Bonnie and Clyde, there will be a symposium in Nacogdoches on October 17th, titled "Go Down Together: The True Untold Story of Bonnie and Clyde - Remembering After 75 Years."
The location for this lecture has not yet been released.
Jeff Guinn will headline the event. Also scheduled to be present are Clyde Barrow's nephew, Buddy Barrow Williams, and Jonathan David, the author of "Running with Bonnie and Clyde."
There is no charge for the seminar but if you wish to eat lunch with the group, the cost is $12.
